Volunteer in Abu Dis

Camden Abu Dis Friendship Association is a charitable trust whose aims are to promote human rights and respect for humanitarian law in the small town of Abu Dis in Palestine and in Palestine generally. As part of our work we are making friendship links between Camden and Abu Dis. We are not a volunteer bureau, but we have successfully introduced volunteers to organisations in Abu Dis and we are encouraged by two things - the fact that the volunteers think it is a worthwhile experience, and the fact that people in Abu Dis appreciate the help and we are constantly being asked to find more people. (For feedback from volunteers, see below).

Since 2005 we have found a stream of people interested in being short-term teachers in the Al-Quds University, in schools and community centres of Abu Dis. There are particular demands for English teaching. There is however scope for placements in other fields such as health, youth work and on a range of community projects. In summers 2006 and 2007, we helped to organise a summer scheme for children and there are plans for another in summer 2008. Two volunteer lawyers have contributed to human rights at the university. Two dentists and several musicians have plans to volunteer. Please contact us with your ideas and we will talk to friends in Abu Dis about the possibilities.
