11-21 November 2011: LOOK AT OUR LIVES: Meetings of British and Palestinian students.

Project summary:

This exchange brought eight students from Al Quds University, Palestine to spend nine days with students from SOAS, UCL and other universities in London. They took part in a photography project that allowed them to tell each other about their lives and compare their experiences as students.

Before travelling, the Palestinian group took photographs of their lives as students which they brought as material to use during the exchange visit. At the same time, British students had a series of meetings in preparation for the exchange. They were in touch with each other by email before the exchange. The young people's programme together in Britain was an exploration of London and student life with a camera. The programme included visits to a number of universities, tourism, meetings and workshops. They worked in pairs on themes of student life and as a whole group to choose photographs for an exhibition comparing student life in Palestine and Britain. This period was very varied, including visits to universities, libraries and lectures, meetings with students, activities of many sorts and an outing to Oxford.

The photo exhibition was launched in a final workshop day with other students from Britain which included a productive workshop on strengthening links between Palestinian and British students.

Following the visit, the photographs from the project have been put on the website www.camdenabudis.net/ lookatourlives.html and also made into a CD so it can be used by other student groups across Britain. Photographs and commentary by the students in English and Arabic have been put into a book in order to promote further twinning activities between students from the two countries.
