Education Links
Palestinian education has suffered enormously from the pressures of Occupation. Young people in Abu Dis have lost years of schooling from closures and curfews. They have poorly resourced schools and have seen terrible things in the street - people shot and killed, family members arrested, older people humiliated, their own way blocked by the army and the Wall. However, teachers from Camden who have visited Abu Dis have been struck by the tremendous motivation to learn that these young people have.
The Education Links group includes teachers, governors and college lecturers interested in making links between the schools and colleges in Camden and in Abu Dis, with the aim of supporting education in Abu Dis and helping people in both places to understand more about each other.
The Education Links group has so far raised money to make internet connections and other computer equipment for schools; linked students and teachers via letter and email; sent books to Abu Dis; sent a number of English teachers to work as volunteers in Abu Dis. In June 2006, we raised money to bring two head teachers and a maths teacher together with four boys and four girls from schools in Abu Dis on a visit to Camden. During this visit they met school children in most of the Camden secondary schools and also visited youth clubs. Click here to see writings, photos and video from the visit.
Education links are currently working towards a teacher exchange with teachers from each side visiting each other. We are also raising money for a music teacher for Abu Dis. Let us know if you can help by making a small regular standing order.
Education links meets regularly and if you agree with our aims, we welcome your involvement. Please contact contact us.
Maths club at the UNWRA school
This was set up after the maths teacher visited maths groups in Camden schools. CADFA Education Links are currently raising money to fund this club and for other school equipment. See photos below.
